I remember one Halloween we were invited to the Reeves for a family Halloween party. When we arrived we saw Shery in the front yard dressed as a witch. She was having so much fun with all of the trick-or-treaters. I decided to stay in the front with her–what a surprise when the children would come to the front door they saw a real live witch!!!!!! Fun was had by all!

Here is a high school photo from Spring 1963 at Richardson High School.  That is Mom in the middle, doing the splits on the floor.

Mom as a high school cheerleader.

It is still very difficult for me to really realize your Mom and my best friend is gone even after 2 years. I have a picture of her smiling face sitting on my desktop next to my computer screen and look at her every time I sit down…which is many times a day. Specific stories or antics I cannot bring to my memory per se…I wish I could. I think it is hard for me in your mom’s case because your mom and I were together so much and talked every day, many times a day, that our lives were so enmeshed that nothing really sticks out. I can say that I was the physical help for your Mom til she died and she was my inspiration, my motivator, my source of creativity and my constant companion. I have never had such a close friend as Shery and never will again…that I am sure of.

Every once in a while in Shreveport we would get big-name bands through the Casinos.  One day Shery found out that KISS was coming to perform at Horseshoe.  She insisted that we go.  I had no idea who KISS was; I had never heard of them.  So I agreed to go.  I have never seen something like that.  Never.  I can remember them shooting off fireworks and him sticking his tongue out.  It was beyond me.  It was funny.  I am sure Shery knew who they were.  There is no doubt in my mind that she knew who they were, but I don’t know why she wanted to go.  I know about Tony Bennett and Barbara Streisand, but I didn’t know KISS.  And, I didn’t want to know him afterwards either.  All that electrical stuff KISS had happening?  That was pretty wild.  We laughed about that experience over and over.

What a tribute to one of the sweetest most nonjudgmental friends I’ve ever had. Sitting in the Reeves kitchen.  Or on the beach.  Or in the bar.  Or in the boat.  All adventures began by Shery deconstructing Suzanne and Lettie’s well-made plan and skewing ever so slightly to her inclination.  I love the pictures, I love the friendship of our gang in those days with our children, and know the love still exists.  The Earth Shook When We Were Born.

Thank you, Jason, for digging up these old photos.  We had so much fun in the early ’90s!
